Vietnam is a motorcycle powerhouse, with traffic accident fatality rate exceeding regional average

Vietnam, which is the setting for videos like this one where a motorcyclist falls over and ends up being hit by an oncoming vehicle, is a country where motorbikes are the most likely to be involved in traffic accidents. Motorcycle-related accidents account for more than 90% of traffic fatalities in the country, and as of the end of 2024, the number of registered motorcycles has reached approximately 77 million. According to WHO estimates, the traffic accident death rate per 100,000 people is 17.7 (2021), which is higher than the Asia-Pacific region average of 15.2 and the Southeast Asian average of 14.4.

It is not uncommon for a single vehicle to deviate from the bike into an accident that involves multiple motorcycles nearby. On February 29, 2024, a truck collided with a motorcycle on National Highway 21 in Thanh Oai province on the outskirts of Hanoi, and then hit three other vehicles parked on the roadside, killing one person. On March 16, 2025, an intoxicated female driver crashed into 10 motorbikes waiting at a traffic light in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thu Duc district, injuring at least five people. In both cases, the number of victims increases due to a single accident, which can be said to be similar to the current video.
