Suicide rate among young people in China increases by 19% in 4 years
Statistics show that suicides caused by competition for entrance exams, such as this one, are on the rise. According to a report by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (released in June 2023), the suicide rate among 5- to 14-year-olds increased at an average annual rate of 10% from 2010 to 2021, and among 15- to 24-year-olds, it increased at an annual rate of 19.6% over the four years from 2017. While the overall suicide rate is on the decline, it appears that only young people are seeing a noticeable increase in suicide rates. The background to this is the fierce competition to get into prestigious universities, and it is reported that around 500 elementary and junior high school students commit suicide each year.
In fact, while the number of applicants for the university entrance exam “Kokao” will reach a record high of 13.42 million in 2024, the number of admissions for four-year universities remains at around 4.5 million, meaning that a simple calculation shows that nearly 9 million people will not be able to get into the university they desire. The weight of this competition, which is said to be tougher than the imperial examinations, places a heavy psychological burden on young people.
