Incidents involving the viral spread on social media of videos showing children brandishing knives or other weapons at their parents are not unique to this recent case in Vietnam. In May 2026, a livestream showing a man threatening his biological mother with a knife in Ha Tinh Province went viral, leading police to identify the individual; earlier that year, in February, a video circulated showing a son in Nghe An Province allegedly beating his mother with a stick and fracturing her arm, prompting local authorities to investigate the facts.
These incidents occur against a backdrop where surveys indicate that approximately one in five adolescents (aged 10–17) in Vietnam suffers from mental health issues such as anxiety disorders, yet fewer than 10% receive support or counseling. Factors cited include exposure to domestic violence and academic pressure; UNICEF has also pointed out that while legal frameworks are being strengthened, violence against children within the home remains deeply entrenched.
