While the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates annual traffic fatalities in China at approximately 250,000, official government statistics place the figure at around 62,000, revealing a significant discrepancy between the two. The mortality rate stands at 17.4 deaths per 100,000 people, a level slightly above the Asia-Pacific regional average of 15.2.
Notably, pedestrians and cyclists account for nearly half of all traffic fatalities—a proportion that also exceeds the regional average. Furthermore, between 2015 and 2020, the share of casualties comprising children aged 14 and under and seniors aged 65 and older rose from 39% to 43%, highlighting a pattern in which those who are physically more vulnerable face a higher risk of danger on the roads.
