Article 184 of Vietnam’s Penal Code (enacted in 2015 and amended in 2017) explicitly defines the crime of incest, stipulating a prison sentence of one to five years for lineal blood relatives or siblings—whether of full or half-blood—who engage in sexual relations while aware of their blood relationship. In contrast, the Japanese Penal Code contains no provision punishing incest itself; since the abolition of the former incest statutes in 1881, the prevailing reality is that consensual sexual activity between adults falls outside the scope of criminal punishment.
