The term “cosplay” is said to have originated in 1983 when an editor for the series Costume Play Daisakusen—then running in Akita Shoten’s magazine My Anime—pointed out that the English phrasing was actually unnatural. The person who made this observation was Tomohiro Machiyama, who would later become known as a film critic; following his comment, the series was retitled Cosplay Daisakusen.
However, there is also a theory that Nobuyuki Takahashi began using the word “cosplay” in 1984 after witnessing a costume contest at a science fiction convention in the United States, meaning accounts regarding the term’s origin vary depending on the source.
