Employer Negligence Cited in Nearly Half of Workplace Accidents in Vietnam
The recent accident at a demolition site in Lam Dong Province is linked to structural issues common to workplace accidents across Vietnam. Of the 675 workplace accidents and 727 fatalities recorded in the country in 2024, employer negligence accounted for 46.9% of accidents and 47.1% of deaths—making it the leading cause, surpassing worker negligence (22.9% of accidents and 20.6% of deaths). Underlying this is a structural issue where informal workers—such as those on casual contracts or self-employed individuals—often fall outside the scope of legal and social protections; the ILO identifies this group as facing a particularly high risk of workplace accidents. Sectors with high fatality rates include construction and building material manufacturing, and the site of this accident—a residential demolition project—falls within this same category.
While the global fatality rate is estimated at approximately four deaths per 100,000 workers, the figure reported for regions including Southeast Asia exceeds 22, highlighting a significant disparity between regions.
