Recurring Fatal Accidents Involving DIY Power Tools

A fatal accident was reported in Vietnam where a man performing DIY work at home accidentally cut his own neck with an electric cutter and died from excessive blood loss; however, fatal DIY accidents involving power tools occur repeatedly both domestically and abroad. In October 2024, a man in Ha Tinh Province died after the water supply drum he was cutting the lid off of using an electric cutting tool exploded. In Wales, UK, an inquest revealed that a man died from blood loss within minutes after an angle grinder fragment severed his femoral artery while he was doing DIY work. Although the mechanisms differ—an explosion in the former case and arterial hemorrhage in the latter—the progression of the latter incident closely resembles the accident in question.

DIY home repairs using electric circular saws are common in Vietnam; a 2019 report noted multiple accidents involving the amputation of hands or fingers due to work performed without proper safety equipment, with replantation surgeries reportedly carried out at Saint Paul Hospital and Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi. The power tool market was valued at approximately US$1.3 billion as of 2024, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 3.2% from 2024 to 2030; the expansion of the middle class—which reached 33 million people by 2022—combined with the popularity of online DIY videos is believed to be driving individual tool purchases.
