Head injuries account for 75% of fatalities in electric motorcycle accidents.
An estimated 300 million electric scooters are in use across China, and police data indicates that riders account for 13.8% of all traffic fatalities and 17.4% of injuries nationwide (according to the WHO China Office). Analyses of these accidents reveal that head injuries are the cause of 75% of fatalities and 80% of serious injuries; consequently, enforcing helmet use has become a key countermeasure.
According to Beijing’s traffic management authorities, electric bicycle-related fatalities account for 35% of all traffic deaths in the city, with 24.4% of these incidents involving the disregard of traffic signals. Violators were most frequently in the 50–59 age group, and the majority of accidents occurred between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. A common scenario leading to such accidents involves a rider moving from a side lane into the main roadway and entering the blind spot of a large vehicle.
