Pattern of Knife Attacks on Ex-Partners Repeated in China
Attacks with bladed weapons against former romantic partners, such as the one in this case, have been repeatedly reported in China in recent years. Article 29 of the Law on the Protection of Rights and Interests of Women (as amended in 2021) explicitly allows victims subjected to stalking or harassment after a relationship has ended to apply for a personal safety protection order; furthermore, “typical cases” published by the Supreme People’s Court demonstrate rulings that imposed no-contact orders on individuals who monitored ex-partners using methods such as GPS tracking or hidden cameras. Meanwhile, a study by the School of Journalism and Communication at Nanjing University, which analyzed 498 cases of female homicide between 2016 and 2020, found that killings by current or former romantic partners accounted for 23.1% of cases and killings by husbands for 46.8%, meaning that approximately 70% of all such homicides were committed by intimate partners.
Indeed, incidents of this nature continue to occur: in July 2016, a man in Kunming, Yunnan Province, stabbed a woman’s husband to death after refusing to end his affair with the married woman; and in November 2024, a man in Anqing, Anhui Province, killed his ex-girlfriend after their relationship had ended. Despite ongoing legal reforms, incidents involving the use of bladed weapons following a breakup show no signs of abating.
