Repeated incidents of death and injury by electric shock at Thai festivals
In Thailand, electric shock accidents caused by temporary lighting and electrical installations—often used to decorate festivals and markets—are frequently reported. According to local media, the latest incident occurred at a temple festival in Suphan Buri Province (central Thailand) while a worker was installing electrical equipment on scaffolding.
Statistics from Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health indicate that the country sees an annual average of approximately 11,000 injuries and 548 fatalities due to electric shock, with the vast majority of victims being male. Past incidents have included a girl suffering a fatal electric shock via a puddle caused by a short-circuit in a decorative arch during the Songkran (water-splashing) festival, and a young girl losing her life due to a short-circuit in night-time market lighting; consequently, the safety management of temporary wiring has repeatedly emerged as a critical issue.
