Academic studies place the probability of pregnancy from rape at approximately 5%.
While pregnancy resulting from rape is often discussed as a shocking event, few academic studies have examined the actual probability. A 1996 national survey of 4,008 adult women in the United States—published in an obstetrics and gynecology journal—estimated the probability of pregnancy following a single incident of rape among victims of reproductive age to be approximately 5.0%.
This figure is significantly lower than the probability of pregnancy (approximately 25–30%) for a healthy woman engaging in a single act of sexual intercourse during ovulation. Based on this rate, the study estimated that approximately 32,101 rape-related pregnancies occur annually in the United States.
