727 people died in Vietnam construction industry in 2019
Accidents like this one, where people are trapped under falling pillars or fences, are by no means rare occurrences in Vietnam. According to an official notification from the country’s Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the number of deaths from occupational accidents nationwide in 2024 will reach 727, an increase of 4.81% from the previous year. By industry, the construction industry is said to have the second highest number of accidents after mining, accounting for 13.25% of all fatal accidents and 11.15% of all fatalities.
According to ILO statistics, at least 108,000 people die each year on construction sites worldwide, and the construction industry accounts for about 30% of all occupational fatalities. Furthermore, in developing countries, construction workers are three to six times more likely to die than in other industries, up from three to four times in developed countries.
In fact, in Vietnam, in June 2025, a fence under construction collapsed in Long An Province, killing a 58-year-old grandmother and her 1-year-old grandson, and in March 2024, a wall collapsed while installing a fence in Nghe An Province, killing a worker. Although the locations and situations are different, they all have one thing in common: structures under construction suddenly collapse, engulfing people.
