Dropped from the national team due to tattoos? China’s ban
In December 2021, China’s General Administration of Sport announced a policy prohibiting national team athletes from getting new tattoos and advising those who already had them to have them removed. The rationale was that athletes should serve as “role models for society”; covering existing tattoos during training or matches is permitted only with team approval.
Since around 2018, a trend of avoiding the casting of tattooed performers has also spread across the television industry, with tattoos being treated as “vulgar culture” that deviates from Party and state norms—and thus as something to be excluded.
