The origin of the name “To-Yoko” is simple: it is a colloquial abbreviation for “next to the Toho Building”—specifically, the Shinjuku Toho Building (which opened in April 2015 and houses TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku). Young people taking selfies began gathering around the building around 2018; initially, employees from nearby restaurants and adult-entertainment establishments referred to them as “To-Yoko Kids,” but by around September 2019, the youths themselves began adopting this label.
