The term “Hame-dori” was coined 17 years after the genre’s originator.
The term hame-dori (self-shot sex footage) emerged around 1988–89. When Nobuyoshi Araki—considered the pioneer of this style in photography—released Sentimental Journey in 1971, the word itself did not yet exist; the practice predated the name.
It was adult video director Company Matsuo (who debuted in 1988) who established the format as a distinct genre, while Toru Muranishi is known as the “Emperor of Hame-dori” for popularizing the technique. Matsuo, alongside Toju Aoi and Mio Kudo, is counted among the “Big Three” of the hame-dori genre.
