Galactorrhea: Breast milk discharge unrelated to pregnancy
There is a condition known as galactorrhea, in which breast milk is discharged from the breasts despite the woman not being pregnant or breastfeeding. While it is most often caused by the excessive secretion of prolactin due to a benign pituitary tumor, it can also be triggered by oral contraceptives, antidepressants, hypothyroidism, or even intense stimulation of the nipples. The Japanese Society of Psychosomatic Medicine defines the condition as the continued secretion of fluid for more than a year after ceasing breastfeeding, or secretion occurring outside of pregnancy and the postpartum period; it is a symptom that up to 20% of women may experience.
