Thailand’s sex industry expanded rapidly following R&R visits by U.S. troops during the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam War lies behind Thailand’s emergence as a major hub for the sex industry catering to foreigners. The Thai government and the U.S. military concluded an agreement providing “R&R” (Rest and Recreation) for American troops, establishing Bangkok as a key destination for such leave. While the number of sex workers in Thailand was estimated at around 20,000 in the 1950s, it surged as approximately 70,000 U.S. soldiers visited the country between 1966 and 1969; at its peak, the figure is said to have reached roughly 400,000 nationwide, with about 300,000 in Bangkok alone.
It is said that in the 1970s, more than half of the tourists visiting Thailand came for sex, a trend that catalyzed the region’s development into a hub for the Southeast Asian sex industry.
