China Sees 700,000 Workplace Accidents Annually; Migrant Workers Account for the Majority
Serious accidents in factories, such as the one shown in this video, are not unusual occurrences in China. According to data compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the death toll from various workplace safety accidents across the country reached 21,242 in 2023. While the total number of fatalities decreased compared to the previous year, the picture varies by sector: the fatality rate per 100,000 workers in industrial, mining, and commercial enterprises rose by 4.2%, and the fatality rate per million tons of coal produced surged by 23.7%.
Furthermore, a report by the U.S.-based human rights organization Human Rights Watch points out that the vast majority of the estimated 700,000 industrial accidents occurring annually in China involve migrant workers (nongmingong). This trend is attributed to their vulnerability to being assigned to hazardous work environments without adequate safety training or proper working conditions; behind the statistical figures lies the reality of workers who face the constant risk of accidents in their daily jobs.
