A heinous crime targeting “ATM customers,” perpetrated by the most depraved of individuals. This video of a 2017 incident serves as a reminder that there are people in this world who will do absolutely anything for money.

An atrocity that even a surveillance network of hundreds of millions of cameras could not prevent.
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the footage in the original article depicts an incident from April 2017 in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China, where a man withdrawing cash at an ATM in a busy area was stabbed to death by an assailant wielding a bladed weapon. Surveillance cameras captured the entire incident, and the suspect was arrested the following day. According to the SCMP, robberies at ATMs are not uncommon in China.
China has established a nationwide surveillance network known as “Sky Net” (Tianwang), which utilizes AI-powered facial recognition technology; hundreds of millions of cameras are used to identify suspects involved in everything from minor infractions to serious crimes, though the system does not prevent the crimes themselves from occurring. Observers point out that this situation is compounded by the spread of a money-centric ethos amidst rapid economic growth—a trend where human relationships and attitudes toward others are judged based on financial considerations, thereby eroding social trust.
