It’s a silver lining amidst the misfortune, I suppose—or something like that.

It’s an accident scene in Indonesia where a motorcyclist has ended up impaled on a car’s exhaust pipe—right in the neck, or perhaps the jaw area. It looks like his airway avoided being pierced.

Why are there so many motorcycle accidents in Indonesia?

In Indonesia, motorcycles account for approximately 85% of all registered motorized vehicles and are widely used for daily transportation. Consequently, they represent a significant share of total accidents; reports indicate that 73% of all traffic accidents involve motorcycles.

In 2021, there were reportedly over 100,000 traffic accidents, resulting in more than 25,000 fatalities and over 120,000 injuries (ranging from serious to minor). Furthermore, it is estimated that accidents involving motorcycles alone claim approximately 25,000 lives and injure over 10,000 people annually.

Given that motorcycles play a central role in traffic, the underlying causes of these accidents likely stem not only from the actions of individual riders but also from structural factors rooted in the vehicle mix and road conditions themselves.
